A fading celebrity takes a black market drug: a substance that replicates cells and temporarily creates a better, younger version of herself. Ray Liotta was cast in the film in February 2022, but died in May of that year before he could film his scenes. Dennis Quaid replaced him, but Liotta is still mentioned in the director’s “thank you notes” during the credits. The bathroom mirror reappears intact after being smashed several times during the fight sequence. Elisabeth Sparkle: There was some slight misuse of the substance. A special thank you in the credits goes to the numerous extras on the theater stage, who became covered in blood. Featured on The 7PM Project: September 20, 2024 episode (2024). Pump It Up Written by Michael Hall, Leonardo Stella Performed by Earl Gregory Produced by Julien Deguines. I must admit that I did an injustice to Madame Fargeat with my review of her first film (“Revenge”), because at the time I perceived it as a pseudo-feminist rape-and-revenge thriller, with significant logic problems. But now it’s clear to me: the “message” is just the starting point; otherwise, she mainly wants to have fun and bring people closer to her wonderful style, which I really liked in her first film. This time it was clear from the beginning: there is no need to even think about suspending disbelief: TV celebrity Elizabeth Sparkle (Demi Moore), no longer very young, is now a leading dancer in a fitness program, is rejected by her producer (Dennis Quaid) because of her age. Then she receives the offer to create a younger version of herself (Margaret Qualley) using the substance mentioned in the title. But to do so, rules have to be followed and it becomes increasingly difficult, especially for the younger version, with serious consequences. And this is where Fargeat comes in, even more than in “Revenge”. Body horror at its finest, almost making Cronenberg, Stuart Gordon and Brian Yuzna look like amateurs. Other horror films (including The Shining, Carrie and Freaks) are also cheerfully cited without seeming forced or self-indulgent. On the other hand, this film is not at all scary, although there are effects that give you goosebumps (I’m just saying “spinal cord piercing”), on the contrary, there is something to laugh about with all the over-the-top action. And huge, huge respect for Demi Moore! It takes a lot of courage to put yourself out there and let yourself be represented like that!
