Could the characters last?

Also along for the ride are the always excellent Ortega, Dafoe, Theroux and Bellucci, although she is completely wasted here. Devito offers us an unforgettable cameo appearance and
Burn Gorman offers us several scenes. VerdictBeetlejuice 2 is one of those sequels that people have been talking about for decades, including countless rumors, fake news and even fan-made announcements, but I never expected to happen. When the trailer came out it was official, undeniable and I was excited and hesitant. You see, I’m of the generation that saw the original movie when it first came out and loved it, but 36 years later I’m getting a sequel! Can it live up to expectations? Well, the answer is very mixed.

Ryder delivered and was fantastic, this was a great comeback

For over three and a half decades the logical thing for this to do was to play heavily with nostalgia, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice surprised me by how little it did. Yes, there are nods here and there, yes there are throwback scenes and yes there is a certain song that comes back, but for the most part they really make a movie here for a new generation that probably hasn’t seen the original more than Beetlejuice fans and I personally didn’t like it and we found it a confusing choice. The next cast, Keaton as Beetlejuice didn’t feel the same, I’m not sure if it was him or the writing, but he wasn’t the captivating character we love and know from the 80’s. Lydia? O'Hara was very much Delia again, but we remember that Delia is a very boring character, right? So this much screen time compared to the original film is definitely not a good thing. Theroux was excellent, Ortega was brilliant, Dafoe was his usual crazy self, and Bellucci was…….

well, she was there

Look, I love Bellucci, but she’s ultimately cast as the film’s antagonist, she’s barely on screen, contributes nothing, and even the characters’ swan song is rushed and frankly awful. You can see that the plot is very tired and extremely generic, it needed that nostalgia, it needed Beetlejuice, it doesn’t have either. And when we have scenes from Beetlejuice, they are very, very pale.
