Quoted in Shrine of Telly: Week 3 (2022)
I enjoyed the movie, but I think I like the show better. Taking a decent film like this and making an adaptation that surpasses it overall is a colossal undertaking. There is no doubt that they spent a fortune on this series. The background, the dialogue, the story – all top notch. Don’t expect it to be exactly like the film because it’s not supposed to be and don’t compare it to the novels (apples to oranges). As far as I can remember, I have never seen the lead actor (Garcia-Rulfo) in the lead role in any film, although he has appeared in some exceptional films in the last decade. He plays this role exceedingly well and I believe we are witnessing a long overdue opportunity for him.
She can’t not act
Surprisingly, he embodies the essence of the lawyer hero required for this role (as well as McConaughey). I believe the success of the series depends on this factor alone. Neve Campbell is great as always. The rest of the supporting cast is satisfactory in my opinion. At least they don’t necessarily diminish the experience. It’s been years since we’ve had a spectacular legal series like The Practice (David E. Kelley), Boston Legal (David E.
Kelley), Ally McBeal (David E
Kelley), The Good Wife (not Kelley), and now The Lincoln Lawyer (David E. Kelley). If this series proves to be as timeless as all of his previous courtroom dramas, it will surpass anything currently on TV (for this genre, of course). Even within the first 30 minutes, I was as hooked as I was so many years ago. Back then, we could only watch one episode a week as soon as it came out, but now, in the age of binge-watching, I can absorb it all in a weekend. I’ve spent a large portion of my life with all of David E. Kelley’s creations/productions and don’t regret a moment of my wasted youth.
Do we have a hint of cop-shaming here?
The only question I have is why they waited so long to produce a major movie again. Of course, but that’s part of the mainstream these days, and whether we like it or not, the organism of the entertainment industry is married to this “culture.” Accept it and move on, or you’ll deny yourself some of the pleasures you deserve, like The Client. Entertainment Value: 9. Acting: 6. Screenplay: 7. Cinematography: 8. Average: 7.5.
